FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR COURSE
The course itself is very straight forward. 125 hours of ground school of which 25 is monitored by an instructor. The remaining 100 hours is quantified in competence in pre-flight and post flight briefing. Flying is 30 hours plus a flight test on course completion.
AFTA FI (A) Training Syllabus
Module 1 – 15 hours Self Study and pre course revision
The purpose of the Pre course study – Module 1 of the Flight Instructor Rating (restricted), is to ensure that each applicant undertakes sufficient refresher study of essential material for the Flight Instructor before the training course but which cannot be covered in depth during the course. Students are expected to provide the relevant study material from their previous PPL (A) and CPL (A) licence training. Pre-course study shall be a minimum 15 hours, which may be credited towards the full 125 hours syllabus. Additional hours may be required at the applicants’ discretion, but will not be credited to the course.
Module 2 – 25 hours intermediate ground time Teaching & Learning ‘Core’ course.
The requirement for maintaining, and where possible improving, pilot training standards is essential particularly as new technology makes aircraft operations more complex. The role of the Instructor and Training Captain together with Flight Examiners and Inspectors becomes the focal point for setting standards and ensuring a common approach.
The course aims:
- to provide guidance in teaching methods and techniques
- to promote and enhance an awareness of ground and flight safety
- to increase an overall competence in flying and theoretical knowledge demanded by the ground and flight tests described in the PART-FCL leading to the issue of the FI (A) and Associated Ratings.
Module 3 – 85 hours Theoretical Knowledge Ground exercises and Pre-flight briefings, Practice and self-study
The purpose of this ground training element of the FI(R) course is to train the student instructor in the teaching of theoretical knowledge subjects required for the issue of an EASA PPL (A) to ab-initio students. The syllabus covers the teaching of the subject material specified in PART-FCL1 for the private pilot licence. The course is designed to give applicants training in teaching theoretical knowledge subjects based upon established teaching methods. These methods are covered in the instructor “core” course. Student instructors will normally cover basic ‘Teaching & Learning’ understanding ‘core “ course methods before undertaking this module. The remainder of Core course – Practice at developing lessons and delivering briefings, may be combined with the knowledge subjects given in this Module.
Module 4 – 30 hours flying in aircraft, which may include 5 hours mutual flying.
Cork Airport is an excellent location to develop skills. The climate can be challenging and you’re operation out of an international airport. This lends itself to increasing your resilience and expanding your capacity all of which will make you a night standard and highly competent instructor.
