In 2014, Dubai edged out London Heathrow and Hong Kong to be the world’s leading airport by international passenger count. (Atlanta’s airport is still the largest in combined domestic and international passenger count, at 95 million per year.) By 2019, the Dubai airport is expected to reach 100 million international passengers yearly. Around 2025, a second and even larger airport will open in Dubai at an investment of $80 billion, with the ability to serve 120 million passengers per year.

These are some of the impressive statistics revealed by Emirates Ireland Manager, Enda Corneille, when he visited Cork recently to speak at the Sales Institute Munster Region Breakfast Lecture Series at the Clarion Hotel, attended by AFTA’s Sales & Marketing Executive, Cathy Mullan. The following are some interesting facts she picked up while there:-

Did you know?
– Fuel makes up 35% of an airline company’s annual costs
– The profit margin for airline companies is a mere 1.8%
– Emirates receives more public awareness from their global sponsorship of major sports events such as Real Madrid, US Open tennis, Formula 1 Racing, Golf and Sailing than from their advertising. Global spend on sponsorship is $800m.
– Emirates, like Ryan Air is 30 years old.
– Emirates, like Ryan Air has had the same CEO for the past 30 years. No co-incidence that these are 2 of the most successful airlines in the world!
– And most importantly for all our cadet pilots and cabin crew trainees –

– Emirates Ireland recruit cabin crew 4 times a year in Ireland, and are CONTINUALLY recruiting for qualified experienced pilots but the experience level changes regularly so keep an eye on Emirates website –www.emirates.com
