AFTA Air Astana cadets on the water in Kinsale, Cork

No stranger to flying or to Kinsale, AFTA Flight Operations, Caroline Twomey, who holds a PPL and is a native, was the ideal person to bring our new Air Astana cadet pilots out for a day on the water.

Very often, our overseas cadets reaction when they fly for the first time over Cork is one of amazement of our green fields and deep blue sea. Hailing from land locked Kazakhstan, it was the first time on the water for some of them.

Caroline had organised a boat trip around Kinsale Harbour, which gives a bird’s eye view of the 17th Century Charles Fort, one of the largest military installations in the country and famous for some of the most momentous events in Irish history including the Williamite War in 1689 and the Civil War in 1922.

According to Caroline, they had a fabulous day on the boat, and they finished off the afternoon at the funfair, the bumpers being the highlight of that bit of fun!

It was then on to “Dinos” for the traditional serving of fish and chips. “I introduced the Kazakhs to mushy peas which they loved”, said Caroline, “Everyone was in top form and thoroughly enjoyed the day. To be honest I’ve never been out with such a happy group. Best day in a long time!

And the good news for our Kazakh cadets is that Caroline is already planning their next adventure!
